Apple, Google face pressure to remove X and Grok from their app stores
Following a recent scandal involving the AI app Grok and social media platform X, a coalition of advocacy groups is urging tech giants Google and Apple to remove access to these platforms from their app stores. The controversy arose when users of Grok were able to generate sexualized images of minors and women, which raised serious concerns about child safety, women’s rights, and privacy.
In letters addressed to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the advocacy groups emphasized that the content produced by Grok violates the policies of both technology companies. They demanded the urgent removal of Grok and X from the app stores to prevent further abuse and criminal activity. Despite these calls, Apple and Google have not yet responded to the requests for comment.
Elon Musk, the owner of X and xAI, the company behind Grok, denied any knowledge of underage images being generated by the app. He stated that the chatbot within Grok declines prompts to create illegal images and that any unforeseen issues are promptly addressed and fixed.
Criticism of Grok reached a peak in early January when users were able to create images of minors in minimal clothing. Copyleaks, a plagiarism and AI content-detection tool, reported detecting thousands of sexually explicit images generated by Grok. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) also expressed concerns about the ease and speed at which such inappropriate content could be created using AI tools like Grok.
In response to the backlash, Grok restricted access to its image generation tool to paying subscribers only. However, the app’s troubles have not ended there. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced an investigation into the sexually explicit material produced by Grok, while U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer raised the possibility of banning X in Britain due to the app’s creation of non-consensual sexualized images.
The European Commission is closely monitoring the situation, particularly the steps taken by X to prevent Grok from generating inappropriate images. With authorities and lawmakers around the world scrutinizing these platforms, it remains to be seen how the tech giants will respond to the demands for action. The scandal surrounding Grok serves as a stark reminder of the ethical implications of AI technology and the need for stringent safeguards to protect users, especially minors and women, from exploitation and harm.
