“Are You Dead,” viral Chinese app, changing its name

The Chinese mobile application formerly known as “Are You Dead?” has decided to rebrand itself after gaining widespread attention in the media. The app, which sounded an alarm if a user failed to check in every 48 hours, quickly rose to the top of the paid app rankings on Apple’s App Store in China, attracting both Chinese and foreign press coverage.

Initially named “Sileme” in Mandarin, which translates to “Are you dead?”, the app was designed to assist individuals living alone by allowing them to register an emergency contact. If a user failed to check in regularly, the app would automatically send an alert to the designated emergency contact, notifying them of a potential issue.

In response to its international success and media coverage, the company behind the app announced that it would be adopting a new global brand name, “Demumu,” in its upcoming release. The app had already been known as “Demumu” in its international version, while “Are You Dead?” was used for the Chinese version.

The company emphasized its commitment to promoting safety and providing protection solutions globally, particularly for individuals living alone. Despite the rebranding, some users expressed surprise and disappointment online, noting that the app’s original name had contributed to its viral popularity.

The name “Sileme” was originally inspired by a popular food delivery app called “Eleme.” The increasing number of people living alone in China, accounting for approximately one-fifth of households in 2024, underscored the importance of apps like “Demumu” in ensuring their safety and well-being.

As the app transitions to its new global brand name, users can expect the same level of security and support for those living independently. The rebranding reflects the company’s dedication to expanding its reach and serving a broader audience of solitary individuals worldwide.
