Are You Even A Bitcoiner If You’re Not On Nostr?

Derek Ross, a prominent figure in the Bitcoin community, has been championing Nostr as the foundation of a more open internet. In his view, Bitcoiners who are not utilizing Nostr are missing out on a crucial aspect of the digital landscape. With a feed that exudes early 2010s Twitter vibes, Ross envisions a future for Nostr that transcends mundane content like food images and travel updates. As the co-founder of the Grow Nostr Initiative and a developer relations specialist at Soapbox.pub, Ross is deeply involved in promoting and utilizing this revolutionary communication platform.

One of Ross’s favorite quips about Nostr and Bitcoin is the comparison between the orange pill and the purple pill. He often states, “The purple pill helps the orange pill go down,” emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between the two technologies. During the recent BTCHel Bitcoin conference in Helsinki, Finland, Ross expressed his fervent support for Nostr, highlighting its significance in enabling freedom of communication, complementing the freedom provided by decentralized money like Bitcoin.

In a candid conversation post-conference, Ross discussed the challenges facing Nostr’s widespread adoption within the Bitcoin community. While acknowledging the platform’s occasional technical glitches, he believes that every Bitcoiner should embrace Nostr for its role in promoting freedom and decentralization. Ross suggests that some Bitcoin enthusiasts may be motivated by superficial gains rather than a genuine commitment to these principles, which could explain the slow uptake of Nostr among certain circles.

Despite these obstacles, Ross remains optimistic about Nostr’s potential to revolutionize social media and communication. He commends individuals like Lyn Alden who successfully navigate both Nostr and traditional platforms, showcasing the versatility and personal touch of Nostr’s user experience. Ross also acknowledges the challenges of transitioning from established social media platforms to Nostr but emphasizes the importance of building a new audience based on principles of decentralization and freedom.

Reflecting on his journey into the world of Nostr, Ross credits Jack Dorsey’s tweet in December 2022 as the catalyst for his involvement. Since then, he has actively contributed to the platform, even crowdfunding his trip to the Baltic Honey Badger conference through Nostr. Ross’s dedication to Nostr is evident in his daily routine, where he prioritizes the platform as the first app he opens each morning.

When asked about concerns regarding centralization due to Jack Dorsey’s significant funding of Nostr developers, Ross remains unfazed. He trusts in Dorsey’s understanding of Nostr’s mission and envisions alternative funding sources as the platform grows. Ultimately, Ross sees Nostr as a transformative force in reshaping the digital landscape, offering a decentralized and liberating alternative to traditional social media platforms.
