As burst of cold air wanes, frigid air is on the way

The recent cold and wintery weather that gripped the nation this week is expected to ease up by Saturday, but another blast of frigid air is on its way for next week. While there are no record-breaking cold temperatures expected for Saturday, the chilly weather will persist, with feels-like temperatures remaining low.

On Saturday, afternoon wind chills are forecasted to be in the mid-20s for Chicago, mid-30s for New York City, and mid-40s for Washington D.C. A quick burst of light snow and wintry precipitation was seen along the 1-95 corridor from Washington D.C. to New York City early Saturday morning, but it was not enough to accumulate significantly.

As the day progresses, icy and slick conditions may linger in these areas, but conditions are expected to improve by late morning. Another round of cold air will move in by Monday, bringing near-freezing high temperatures and near-zero low temperatures to the Midwest and Northeast. Meanwhile, the West will experience a warming trend, with some areas potentially breaking daily record highs.

A quick-moving snowstorm is set to move through the Dakotas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Illinois over the weekend. The heaviest snow is expected in Iowa and southern Minnesota, where accumulations could reach 3 to 7 inches. By Sunday evening, snow is expected in Chicago and Milwaukee, with accumulations of up to 3 to 4 inches.

The system will continue to move east, bringing cold air to the Northeast, but little snow aside from normal lake-effect snow is expected. In the Rocky Mountains, heavy snowfall is forecasted for Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and Utah, with some areas seeing over a foot of snow.

Overall, while the cold weather will persist in many parts of the country, warmer temperatures are on the horizon for the West. Stay tuned for updates as the weather continues to evolve.
