As Nancy Guthrie ransom deadline passes, investigators appear uncertain if it’s real: Experts
The Guthrie family, including “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, is facing a deadline set for Monday to pay a ransom for the release of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who was allegedly kidnapped from her Arizona home. Law enforcement is still investigating the authenticity of the ransom demands and trying to ascertain if the actual kidnappers are behind them.
Unverified notes sent to media outlets by the purported abductor requested a ransom payment in bitcoin by 5 p.m. PT. Despite taking the notes seriously, law enforcement has not confirmed their legitimacy. Retired FBI special agent Rich Frankel emphasized the lack of evidence supporting the claims, including no proof of life provided in the messages.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have been actively appealing for their mother’s safe return through social media videos. They are willing to cooperate with the demands to ensure Nancy’s release. However, law enforcement officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nancy’s disappearance.
Investigators have been revisiting Nancy Guthrie’s home, collecting potential evidence such as blood drops matching her DNA, a propped-open door, and a disconnected doorbell camera. Nancy’s personal belongings, including her cellphone and Apple Watch, were left behind at her residence. The family is urging the public for assistance in resolving the case.
Retired FBI agent Brad Garrett highlighted the lack of communication and negotiation with the possible abductor, indicating a one-way street in the demands. Investigators are working to corroborate the information provided in the ransom notes and have obtained surveillance footage of a suspicious vehicle near the Guthrie residence.
As the investigation continues, the Guthrie family remains hopeful for a resolution. They are advised not to pay the ransom without adequate proof of Nancy’s well-being. The deadline looms as investigators strive to gather crucial evidence and potentially identify the perpetrators behind Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
