Aspiring National Guardsman, 19, killed by drunk driver days before birthday at California bus stop
An aspiring National Guardsman tragically lost his life at just 19 years old after being struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver at a California bus stop. Ricky Ray Reyes Jr. was waiting for the bus at Del Paso and El Centro roads in North Natomas when the driver veered off the road and hit him, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Reyes, a dedicated deli worker and former Junior ROTC cadet who spent his weekends at the Army National Guard Base in Sacramento, had recently completed a tour at a local trade school before the fatal accident. His family described him as an amazing and caring individual, with a knack for making sandwiches and a heart of gold.
Just eight days shy of his 20th birthday, Reyes was killed in the tragic incident. The driver, who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, was taken to the hospital with injuries following the crash. The suspect has since been arrested and is currently hospitalized, awaiting further legal proceedings.
The devastating loss of Reyes marks the 97th motor vehicle-related fatality in Sacramento County this year, highlighting the pressing issue of road safety in the area. Isaac Gonzalez, founder of Slow Down Sacramento, expressed his sorrow over the incident and emphasized the need for systemic changes to prevent future tragedies.
City officials are now conducting investigations at the crash site to assess potential modifications that could enhance safety measures and reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future. The community has come together to support Reyes’ family during this difficult time, with a GoFundMe campaign raising over $22,000 in his memory.
The untimely death of Ricky Ray Reyes Jr. has left a deep impact on his loved ones and the community as a whole, serving as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving and road safety awareness. May his memory be honored as efforts are made to prevent further loss of life on our roads.
