ROME — During Masses at various locations in Rome, from housing projects to tourist districts, the Catholic faithful gathered on Sunday to pray for the upcoming conclave that will select the successor to Pope Francis.

The congregants, both young and old, shared a common desire for the next pope to make faith more accessible to marginalized communities and to promote peace in a world fraught with challenges.

Michele Cufaro, a glass and metalworker who has experienced poverty and exclusion firsthand, expressed his hope for a pontiff who would prioritize helping the poor and fostering peace.

Ida Di Giovannantonio, a long-time resident of a public housing project, emphasized the importance of welcoming and loving the less fortunate, underscoring the need for compassion and support.

Lisa Remondino and Mathieu Dansoko, representing different socio-economic backgrounds, echoed the call for the next pope to continue Pope Francis’ legacy of supporting migrants and advocating for peace.

As the faithful prepare for the election of the new pope, Cardinal Oswald Gracias of India, despite being unable to vote due to age restrictions, emphasized the importance of selecting a pontiff who can address the current challenges and needs of the Church and society.
