Attacked subway cellist plays national anthem for Knicks

Iain Forrest, the subway busker who gained attention after being brutally attacked at the Herald Square station, has now found success performing at NBA games, specifically playing the national anthem on his electric cello at Madison Square Garden for the New York Knicks.
The talented musician has received praise from renowned filmmaker Spike Lee, who commended Forrest for his performance. Despite facing technical difficulties during one performance, Forrest received overwhelming support and applause from the audience.
In addition to playing the national anthem, Forrest has also performed songs like Rihanna’s “We Found Love” during halftime shows. He described the experience of being on the same stage as basketball stars like Jalen Brunson as surreal and rewarding.
Originally from New Jersey, Forrest moved back to New York in 2017 to pursue medical school at Mt. Sinai. Alongside his studies, he participated in the MTA’s “Under New York” music program as a busker. His musical talent caught the attention of singer Josh Groban, leading to opportunities to perform at Radio City Music Hall and eventually with the New York Yankees and the Knicks.
Despite a traumatic incident in 2024 when he was attacked while performing at a subway station, Forrest has continued to advocate for the safety of subway performers and has returned to playing for commuters and fans at Knicks games. As he prepares to graduate from medical school and start a job at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital, Forrest’s journey from subway busker to NBA performer is a true testament to his resilience and talent. In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. From work deadlines to family commitments, it can feel like there is never enough time in the day to slow down and take a moment for ourselves. However, it is important to remember the importance of self-care and the role it plays in promoting overall well-being.
Self-care is defined as any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. This can include activities such as exercise, meditation, journaling, or simply taking a few moments to relax and unwind. While self-care may seem like a luxury that we can’t afford in our busy lives, it is actually essential for maintaining a healthy balance and preventing burnout.
One of the key benefits of self-care is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. By taking time to focus on ourselves and our needs, we can lower our cortisol levels and promote a sense of calm and relaxation. This can have a ripple effect on our overall well-being, improving our mood, energy levels, and ability to cope with daily challenges.
In addition to reducing stress, self-care also plays a crucial role in improving our physical health. Regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep are all important components of self-care that can help us maintain a healthy lifestyle. By prioritizing our physical health, we can prevent chronic diseases, boost our immune system, and increase our overall longevity.
Furthermore, self-care can have a positive impact on our mental health as well. Taking time to engage in activities that bring us joy and fulfillment can boost our self-esteem, reduce feelings of depression and anxiety, and improve our overall outlook on life. Whether it’s spending time with loved ones, pursuing a hobby, or simply taking a mental health day, self-care can help us feel more centered and balanced.
Overall, self-care is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. By prioritizing our mental, emotional, and physical well-being, we can improve our overall quality of life and prevent burnout. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember to take a moment for yourself and engage in activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Your future self will thank you.
