Australian Open champion Madison Keys loses in the US Open’s first round to Renata Zarazua of Mexico

The U.S. Open got off to a surprising start on Monday as Madison Keys, the No. 6 seed and reigning Australian Open champion, suffered a shocking first-round defeat to Renata Zarazua of Mexico. Keys, who struggled with her form and confidence throughout the match, committed a staggering 89 unforced errors, including 14 double faults, ultimately falling 6-7 (10), 7-6 (3), 7-5 to the 82nd-ranked Zarazua.

In a post-match interview, Keys admitted that nerves got the better of her, leading to poor decision-making and sluggish footwork on the court. Despite her status as a major champion, Keys was unable to find her rhythm and succumbed to an inspired performance by Zarazua, who capitalized on her opponent’s mistakes to secure the biggest win of her career.

Zarazua, who had previously struggled against top-10 opponents, showed great composure and resilience throughout the match, overcoming a set and 3-0 deficit to emerge victorious. The Mexican player, who now resides in Florida, expressed her delight at playing on the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium and credited her brother for introducing her to tennis as a safer alternative to gymnastics and diving.

In other matches on Day 2 of the U.S. Open, Brazilian teenager João Fonseca celebrated his 19th birthday with a straight-sets win, while Canadian prodigy Vicky Mboko fell to two-time major champion Barbora Krejcikova. Veteran players Petra Kvitova and Caroline Garcia suffered defeats in their final professional matches, marking the end of their illustrious careers.

The day also saw Venus Williams bow out in her first Grand Slam appearance in two years, as young sensation Carlos Alcaraz impressed with a new haircut and a convincing victory over Reilly Opelka. As the tournament progresses, fans can look forward to exciting matchups featuring Grand Slam champions Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, and Jannik Sinner in the upcoming rounds.

With a packed schedule for Day 3, including Gauff’s highly anticipated match against Ajla Tomljanovic, the U.S. Open promises to deliver more thrilling moments and unexpected upsets as the competition heats up. Stay tuned for the latest updates and results from the tournament.
