Authorities prevent mass shooting at Atlanta airport after man threatens to ‘shoot up’ terminal
Georgia authorities have successfully prevented a potential mass shooting at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday morning. The incident was averted after the family of Billy Joe Cagle alerted the Cartersville Police Department about their relative’s intentions to “shoot it up” at the airport. Cagle, armed with an assault rifle, had livestreamed his plans on social media, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
Upon receiving the tip-off, officers quickly located Cagle at the airport and took him into custody within minutes. A search of Cagle’s vehicle parked outside the terminal revealed a Springfield AR-15 assault rifle with 27 rounds of ammunition. Atlanta Police Department Chief Darin Schierbaum commended the officers involved in preventing a potential tragedy, stating that Cagle was likely planning to retrieve the weapon and use it inside the crowded terminal.
Cagle, who has a prior felony conviction, was charged with suspicion of terroristic threats, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, and firearms charges. Court records show that he has a history of incarceration for possession of marijuana in 2000. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens described Cagle as having “mental challenges,” hinting at underlying mental health issues.
In a troubling Facebook post, Cagle mentioned concerns about his safety and potential foul play, indicating that he takes medication for schizophrenia. The incident is currently under investigation as authorities seek to uncover the motive behind Cagle’s actions. Despite multiple attempts, Cagle’s relatives have declined to comment on the situation.
The swift response from law enforcement and the cooperation of Cagle’s family helped thwart a potentially devastating attack at one of the world’s busiest airports. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in preventing acts of violence.
