Bank Insider Allegedly Obtains Customers’ Debit Card PINs, Drains $440,000 From Their Accounts in Just Two Months: DOJ

An associate banker at a large national bank is facing serious allegations after being accused of stealing a substantial amount of money from customers over a short period of time. Sixto Christopher Porras, who worked at a bank in San Francisco, allegedly embezzled around $440,000 from two retail bank customers by using their debit card information.

Porras managed to carry out the theft by obtaining the customers’ security PINs and taking possession of their debit cards. In one instance, a customer visited the bank to conduct a wire transfer, during which Porras acquired the customer’s security PIN without their knowledge. He then proceeded to use the debit card to steal approximately $100,000 from the customer’s account. In another incident, Porras assisted a customer with a fraudulent charge issue and obtained their security PIN. He then had the customer’s debit card reissued and sent to his own residence, using it to embezzle around $340,000 from the customer’s accounts.

Porras no longer works for the bank in question and is now facing charges of embezzlement of bank funds and access device fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine for the embezzlement charge, as well as up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the access device fraud charge.
