Bank Insider Reportedly Forges Names and Fills Out Fake Withdrawal Slips, Drains $75,000 From Accounts of Eight Customers

Cleveland Bank Teller Accused of Embezzling $75,000 from Customers

A recent scandal has rocked First Federal Savings of Lorain as one of their bank tellers, Denice James, has been accused of orchestrating a scheme to steal money from customers’ accounts. According to reports, James allegedly siphoned off approximately $75,000 from eight victims and also embezzled $1,000 from the bank itself.

The fraudulent activities took place between July 25, 2023, and November 2, 2023. James devised a method where she would forge customers’ names on bank slips just before closing time when there were no customers present. She would then process unauthorized withdrawals and pocket the cash for herself.

James now faces serious charges including eight counts of bank fraud, eight counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of embezzlement. Despite the mounting evidence, she has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Pattern of Bank Teller Fraud

This incident is part of a concerning pattern of fraud involving bank tellers across the country. Earlier this year, a bank teller in Maryland admitted to stealing $255,000 from elderly clients by orchestrating fraudulent withdrawals with the help of accomplices impersonating victims.

In another case in New York, a bank teller was accused of pilfering a staggering $1,000,000 in cash from the bank’s vault by forging signatures during the end-of-day tally process.

These incidents shed light on the vulnerabilities within the banking system and the importance of robust internal controls to prevent such fraudulent activities.
