BBC iPlayer has Failed the Winter Olympics in 2 Key Ways

The Winter Olympics is a thrilling event for sports enthusiasts, offering breathtaking landscapes and incredible human achievements. As a skier and extreme sports lover, I eagerly tuned in to the BBC’s coverage of the games, only to be disappointed by two key issues with their iPlayer streaming app.

One major letdown was the absence of any 4K streams for the Winter Olympics events. Despite the BBC’s successful testing of Ultra HD content on iPlayer in 2016, viewers like myself were left wondering why we couldn’t enjoy the Winter Olympics in high quality. After all, we’ve been treated to 4K broadcasts of Wimbledon, World Cup football, previous Olympics, and even a Royal Wedding. It begs the question – where is the top-notch coverage for the Winter Olympics that we’ve come to expect, especially since we’ve paid for our TV Licenses?

While NBC and Peacock are offering the Winter Olympics in Ultra HD, it seems that the BBC may have missed out on securing the rights to broadcast in this format. Nevertheless, the lack of 4K streams on iPlayer remains a significant disappointment for viewers like myself who crave the best possible viewing experience.

Another issue I encountered while watching the Winter Olympics on iPlayer was the absence of a split-screen feature. With so many events happening simultaneously during the Olympics, it can be challenging to choose which one to watch. The limited live coverage on iPlayer, with just two streams available for the 2026 games, made it difficult to keep up with all the action. A simple split-screen option would have allowed viewers to watch multiple events at once, with the ability to choose which one to focus on and even select the audio feed for each stream.

As the popularity of live TV wanes and TV License numbers decline, it’s essential for the BBC to provide compelling reasons for viewers to continue supporting their services. By addressing these shortcomings in their Winter Olympics coverage on iPlayer, the BBC can enhance the viewing experience and ensure that fans like myself can fully enjoy the excitement of the games.
