Beloved, churchgoing Italian security guard ID’d as victim randomly beaten to death by NYC madman
Nicola Tanzi, a 64-year-old security guard, was tragically beaten to death by a sadistic madman outside a subway station in Brooklyn. Originally from Italy, Tanzi settled in New York City roughly two decades ago and became a beloved figure in the tight-knit Italian community of Bensonhurst.
Described as congenial and friendly by those who knew him, Tanzi was a fixture in the community, known for his kindness and willingness to help others. He worked as a security guard near the MetroTech station, where he was brutally attacked by David Mazariegos, a 25-year-old with a lengthy criminal record.
Mazariegos confessed to disliking Tanzi’s kind gesture of holding the door open for him, leading to a senseless and brutal assault that ultimately claimed Tanzi’s life. The news of Tanzi’s death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving friends and fellow parishioners in disbelief and grief.
Carmine Racaro, who co-owned a flower shop near Tanzi’s apartment, remembered him as a kind and jovial individual who was like family to them. Tanzi had plans to retire next year and spend his golden years helping out at the flower shop.
Tanzi was an active member of St. Athanasius-St. Dominic’s Parish in Bensonhurst, where he volunteered as an usher and attended Italian mass regularly. He also frequented Sacred Hearts & St. Stephen in Carroll Gardens, another church with strong ties to the Italian community.
Known for his devotion to the Blessed Mother, Tanzi was a beloved member of the congregation, always willing to lend a helping hand and spread kindness. His tragic death has left a void in the community, with friends and fellow parishioners mourning the loss of a gentle soul.
If there is one thing that can be said about Nicola Tanzi, it is that he lived his faith through his actions. His legacy of kindness and compassion will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his ability to forgive even in the face of such senseless violence is a testament to his character. Nicola Tanzi will be remembered as a cherished member of the community, whose presence will be deeply missed.
