Beloved teacher dies in fall 2 miles into long-planned national park trek

Beloved Washington State Teacher Dies in Tragic Hiking Accident

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Harris Levinson, a well-known teacher from Washington state, tragically fell to his death just two miles into his solo backpacking trip along the John Muir hiking trail last month. Levinson, 61, was a beloved American studies and theater teacher at Vashon High School, located just outside of Seattle.

Levinson embarked on his journey from Whitney Portal in California on June 23, with the goal of reaching Yosemite National Park. Unfortunately, his adventure took a fatal turn when he fell nearly 100 feet into a gully just a short distance into the 140-mile trek. His body was recovered by Inyo County Search and Rescue on July 12.

Reports indicate that Levinson may have attempted to take the more challenging “climber’s route” up Mount Whitney, a route known for its difficulty and danger, instead of sticking to the main John Muir Trail.

Friends and colleagues of Levinson described him as a passionate and joyful individual who had been eagerly anticipating this hiking trip for months. His positive spirit and zest for life were evident to all who knew him.

Carolyn McCarthy, a close friend of Levinson, shared on a Caring Bridge page dedicated to him, “Folks who connected with him in his final days report that he was joyful, eager, friendly, and full of appreciation for his life and the opportunity to go on this adventure. In other words, he was Harris.”

Levinson’s impact was not limited to the classroom; he was also known in the Vashon community as a talented writer, theater artist, puppeteer, and occasional stand-up comic. His presence brought warmth and joy to those around him, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Steven Sterne, who acted alongside Levinson in a production of “The Hatmaker’s Wife,” fondly recalled their time working together, stating, “Everyone who encountered Harris experienced his warmth and joy and desire to connect, and these qualities made him a wonderful actor and scene partner.”

The tragic loss of Levinson serves as a reminder of the inherent risks of outdoor adventures, especially in challenging terrains like Yosemite National Park. Despite the dangers, Levinson’s spirit of adventure and love for nature will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Yosemite National Park, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rugged trails, is also one of the deadliest state parks in America, with an average of 11 deaths recorded within its boundaries each year, according to the National Park Service.
