Bessent says U.S. and China have reached framework in tariff negotiations
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announced that a “substantial framework” has been established for trade talks between the United States and China. This progress comes just in time for a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, potentially preventing hefty tariffs on imported Chinese goods.
In an interview with ABC News’ “This Week,” Bessent expressed optimism about the upcoming meeting between the two leaders. He mentioned that President Trump had provided him with maximum leverage by threatening 100% tariffs if China imposed export controls on rare earth minerals. Fortunately, it seems that these tariffs will be avoided if the deal holds. Additionally, Bessent revealed that China is considering delaying the implementation of export controls on rare earth minerals for a year.
Furthermore, Bessent hinted at a possible resolution regarding American soybeans. China had stopped purchasing soybeans from the U.S. amidst the ongoing trade war, despite being the largest buyer of American soybeans. Bessent believes that a deal on soybeans is on the horizon, which would benefit American soybean farmers in the current and upcoming seasons.
Addressing the ongoing government shutdown, Bessent expressed reluctance to reopen negotiations with Democrats. He criticized Democratic lawmakers for their stance on extending pandemic-era health care subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of the year. Bessent highlighted the efforts of Republican senators who have voted multiple times to reopen the government and called on moderate Democratic senators to end the impasse.
Overall, the progress made in the trade talks between the U.S. and China, along with potential resolutions on rare earth minerals and soybeans, bode well for economic stability and cooperation between the two nations. While the government shutdown remains a contentious issue, there is hope for a resolution as both parties navigate the challenges ahead.
