‘Big hearts and little brains’
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon criticized Zohran Mamdani, labeling him as “more a Marxist than a socialist,” and took a dig at the Democratic Party for placing too much emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) rather than practical policies.
Dimon cautioned against supporting Mamdani, who secured the Democratic primary for New York City mayor with proposals such as a rent freeze, free buses, and city-owned grocery stores.
The CEO expressed his concerns about Mamdani’s ideological approach, stating that it lacks real-world significance and echoed sentiments shared by other prominent figures like billionaire investor Bill Ackman.
A group called “New Yorkers for a Better Future Mayor 25” has emerged to counteract what they perceive as a Marxist threat from Mamdani, aiming to raise $20 million for an anti-Mamdani campaign.
Despite the backlash, Mamdani plans to engage with business groups like the Partnership for New York City, which includes Dimon on its board.
Dimon also criticized the Democratic Party’s focus on DEI policies, suggesting that they have gone overboard and failed to grasp practical solutions. He questioned the lack of business advisors in the Biden administration and emphasized the need for a more balanced approach to diversity initiatives.
While JPMorgan declined to comment on Dimon’s remarks, the CEO had previously supported DEI policies but ordered a review of the bank’s approach following a Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action.
