Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, George Mackay, Dominic West in ‘& Sons’

Argentinian filmmaker Pablo Trapero, renowned for his acclaimed crime drama “The Clan,” is embarking on a new and familiar journey with his first English-language feature film, “& Sons.” The film, based on David Gilbert’s novel of the same name, co-written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Sarah Polley, is set to premiere at TIFF on September 7.

The storyline revolves around A.N. Dyer, a world-famous writer portrayed by Bill Nighy, who is deeply affected by the loss of a close friend. Confronting his own mortality, Dyer calls upon his estranged sons in an attempt to reconcile with them. However, upon their arrival, he unveils a shocking revelation that challenges belief. Imelda Staunton plays his divorced wife, with Dominic West in a pivotal supporting role. The stellar cast also includes Anna Geislerová, George Mackay, Johnny Flynn, and Noah Jupe.

While Trapero has previously worked on English-language series, such as “Echo 3” for AppleTV+ and “ZeroZeroZero,” “& Sons” marks his first venture into directing an English-language film. The project boasts an impressive lineup of BAFTA-winning and nominated actors, including Nighy and Staunton, who are also Oscar-nominated.

Behind the camera, Emmy-winning composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer provides the score, and multi-Emmy winner Nina Gold handles the casting. Trapero commends the cast for their dedication and passion, noting their commitment to delivering exceptional performances.

The film’s thematic exploration of family dynamics resonates with Trapero’s previous works like “The Quietude,” “The Clan,” and “Rolling Family.” He delves into the connections we form with those around us, emphasizing the sense of belonging or alienation that these relationships can evoke.

In adapting the story, Trapero chose to set the film in the U.K. instead of its original New York backdrop, creating a more ambiguous and universal setting. The production process was marked by care, respect, and a shared commitment to experimentation, with the cast and crew approaching each scene with fresh eyes and enthusiasm.

Produced by Infinity Hill, Elevation Pictures, and Maven Screen Media, “& Sons” is a collaborative effort spearheaded by Trapero through his production company, Matanza Cine. The film promises to be a compelling exploration of family dynamics, mortality, and the complexities of human relationships, brought to life by a talented ensemble of actors and filmmakers.
