Diane Reynolds Falls Victim to Bitcoin ATM Scam
Diane Reynolds, a retiree from Maryland, found herself in a distressing situation when she received a message claiming her computer had been compromised. The voice message instructed her not to turn her computer on or off, and to call a provided phone number for tech support. Little did she know, this was the beginning of a scam that would cost her $13,100.
The scammer, posing as a tech support agent, convinced Reynolds that hackers had gained access to her bank account. To protect her funds, she was advised to convert the money into bitcoin. Following the instructions, Reynolds withdrew her entire bank balance and headed to a nearby gas station with a bitcoin ATM operated by Athena Bitcoin, a company with over 4,000 terminals across the U.S.
Washington, D.C., Attorney General Brian Schwalb expressed concern over the rise in cryptocurrency scams associated with bitcoin ATM providers, leading to the theft of millions of dollars. He filed a lawsuit against Athena Bitcoin, alleging undisclosed fees and inadequate anti-fraud measures.
Athena Bitcoin defended itself, stating that it implements strict safety protocols and denies the allegations brought against them. Reynolds, along with her attorney Vaught Stewart, is also taking legal action against the company for profiting from fraudulent activities.
Reynolds, now an advocate for raising awareness about such scams, emphasized the importance of educating others to prevent them from falling victim. Financial scams related to bitcoin ATMs have been on the rise, with the Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau highlighting the vulnerability of seniors to such schemes.
It is crucial to remain vigilant and skeptical of any claims suggesting computer hacking or unauthorized access to accounts. By staying informed and cautious, individuals can protect themselves from falling prey to financial scams orchestrated through bitcoin ATMs.
