Bitwise CIO cites ‘the four-year cycle’ for losses
The recent plunge in bitcoin has left many investors puzzled, with experts pointing to a variety of factors that may have contributed to the downward trend. Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management, has highlighted the “four-year cycle” as a key catalyst for the current retracement in the crypto market. This phenomenon, which has occurred three times before, suggests a pattern that investors should be aware of.
In a recent interview on “ETF Edge,” Hougan emphasized that there is no single factor to blame for the bitcoin retracement. He noted that investors have been shifting their focus to other assets such as gold and artificial intelligence stocks, leading to a lack of interest in cryptocurrencies. Additionally, concerns about quantum risk and the potential impact of Fed nominee Kevin Warsh have added to the uncertainty in the market.
Despite the recent volatility in bitcoin, Hougan remains optimistic about the future of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) specializing in crypto. He believes that the current market dynamics are driven by a “self-fulfilling prophecy” and that the fundamental scarcity argument for bitcoin remains intact. With only 21 million bitcoin in existence, the demand for derivatives will eventually impact the spot market.
Bitwise Asset Management, with over $15 billion in assets under management, is actively involved in the crypto ETF space. The firm recently launched the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF, which tracks the price of the cryptocurrency solana. While the fund has experienced a decline since its inception, Hougan remains confident in the long-term potential of crypto ETFs.
In the midst of the market turbulence, bitcoin has dropped below $61,000, reaching its lowest level in over 16 months. Despite the challenges, investors are hopeful that the crypto market will rebound and continue to grow in the coming months. As the industry evolves, it will be crucial for investors to stay informed and adapt to the changing landscape of digital assets.
