Blood Window Launches Two-Day Program on Vertical Filmmaking in Mexico
Mexico is stepping up to support emerging genre filmmakers in a rapidly evolving audiovisual landscape with the launch of Blood Window Vertical. This two-day intensive program, taking place on September 26 and 27, is a response to the changing dynamics of storytelling and consumption in the digital age.
Organized primarily by the Morbido Group and the Cannes Film Market, the founders of Ventana Sur’s genre pic market, Blood Window Vertical aims to equip filmmakers with the necessary tools and insights to thrive in the new format of Vertical storytelling. The program will feature workshops, masterclasses, talks, and networking opportunities to help creators navigate the world of horror, fantasy, and sci-fi across various platforms and formats.
The shift towards digital platforms, mobile-first viewing, and shorter, vertical content has reshaped the way stories are told and consumed. Traditional film and TV no longer set the standard, as audiences increasingly turn to their phones for immersive and engaging content. This evolution challenges emerging filmmakers to embrace new storytelling techniques that are faster, more flexible, and tailored for mobile screens, without compromising on depth or creativity.
Daniel de la Vega, the program director, emphasized the democratization of the fantastic genre through platforms like Blood Window Vertical. By choosing Mexico City as the venue, known for its creative talent and thriving industry, the program aims to amplify new voices and support projects that push the boundaries of storytelling. With the participation of online reviewer Jesús Iglesias Villarreal, who has a strong connection with young audiences, Blood Window Vertical seeks to bring the fantastic genre to the forefront of the vertical format.
The event kicks off with Day One focusing on practical tools for creating genre stories using only a mobile phone. Led by mentor Mario Rulloni, filmmakers will explore narrative techniques, visual languages, and production methods tailored for the vertical format. The workshop will delve into framing, pacing, lighting, and sound specific to mobile formats, drawing inspiration from trends on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Day Two shifts to in-person sessions at the Facultad de Cine in Mexico City, delving into content development, community building, and strategies for making genre stories go viral. Dr. Blanca Lopez, a narrative designer and researcher, will lead an intensive workshop on turning dark ideas into powerful narratives. Master Talks by industry experts like Jesús Iglesias Villarreal, Pablo Guisa Koestinger, and Isaac Ezban will provide insights into the present and future of genre cinema in Ibero-America and beyond.
Blood Window Vertical represents a unique opportunity for emerging filmmakers to explore the possibilities of vertical storytelling and connect with industry experts in the genre space. With a focus on creativity, innovation, and community building, the program is set to inspire a new generation of storytellers in the fantastic genre.
