Blue Origin’s moon dust battery was made by AI with Istari Digital

Revolutionary technology has been developed using artificial intelligence to transform moon dust into a sustainable energy source.

The innovative moon vacuum, unveiled by Blue Origin at Amazon’s re:Invent 2025 conference in Las Vegas, leverages cutting-edge technology from startup Istari Digital.

“The moon vacuum extracts heat from moon dust, effectively converting it into an energy source similar to a battery,” explained Istari CEO Will Roper in an interview with CNBC’s Morgan Brennan.

Traditional spacecraft operating on the moon face challenges during lunar night periods, where extreme temperature drops render hardware unusable without a reliable power source.

“It’s like vacuuming at home, but generating electricity in the process,” Roper elaborated.

Roper highlighted that the AI-driven battery design was a significant milestone, with the technology setting guardrails to prevent AI from deviating while generating designs.

Istari’s technology, backed by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, has already made strides in collaboration with the U.S. government and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin on groundbreaking projects.
