‘Bones’ Star Emily Deschanel Was Called ‘Unprepared’ in Season 1
Emily Deschanel’s Early Struggles on “Bones”
Emily Deschanel, best known for her role as Dr. Temperance Brennan on the hit TV show “Bones,” recently opened up about the challenges she faced during the early days of filming the series. In a candid interview on David Duchovny’s “Fail Better” podcast, Deschanel revealed that she almost walked away from the show during its first season due to the intense demands of the role.
Deschanel recalled the grueling shooting hours and the overwhelming amount of dialogue she had to memorize for each episode. “We were working insane hours, longer than just a normal series,” she said. “You’re working 14- to 16-hour days, and then I had to memorize the lines. So I’d be staying up late night memorizing lines. I would joke that I would go home and just cry in a bathtub every night because I was just so overwhelmed.”
She admitted that the pressure to perform was so intense that she struggled to remember her lines and often found herself stressed and sleep-deprived. This reached a breaking point when an accident on her way to set caused her to arrive 30 minutes late, resulting in a serious conversation with series creator Hart Hanson.
“Hart knocked on my trailer door, which was not a usual thing,” Deschanel said. “He took me aside and said, ‘The studio has concerns about your work.’ They said that I was late and unprepared. That to me — I get emotional just thinking about it now because it was probably shame.”
Despite the setback, Deschanel made a conscious effort to improve and ensure she was always on time for filming. Thankfully, the show was picked up for additional episodes the day after her conversation with Hanson. The creator also stepped in to support her, providing a bigger trailer and more time to rehearse her lines.
Deschanel credits Hanson for helping her navigate the challenges of the show and find ways to manage the demanding schedule. “Hart helped me find ways to be better, get my job done in terms of learning my lines and remembering them,” she said. “A lot of it was having downtime or having some scene that I’m not in, etc. He’s just a good one. We were so lucky.”
The Success of “Bones”
“Bones” went on to become a massive success, running for 246 episodes across 12 seasons on Fox from 2005 to 2017. Deschanel starred alongside David Boreanaz, Michaela Conlin, T.J. Thyne, and Tamara Taylor in the series, portraying the brilliant anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan. The show followed Brennan as she used her expertise in forensic anthropology to help the FBI solve complex homicide cases.
Deschanel’s dedication and hard work paid off, and she became an integral part of the show’s success. Despite the early challenges she faced, she persevered and delivered a memorable performance that endeared her to fans around the world.
