‘Boots’ Canceled by Netflix After First Season

Netflix has made the decision to cancel the show “Boots” after just one season, according to a report from Variety. The coming-of-age queer drama series made its debut on the streaming platform on October 9.

The show, executive produced by TV legend Norman Lear, was created by Andy Parker and based on Greg Cope White’s book “The Pink Marine.” The story follows the journey of Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer, a closeted teen in the ’90s who enlists in the Marine Corps alongside his best friend Ray McAffey, portrayed by Liam Oh. Despite the challenges they face as LGBTQ individuals in a military environment that did not welcome them at the time, the characters find support and camaraderie among their fellow recruits as they navigate the trials of boot camp.

The cast also includes Ana Ayora, Blake Burt, Cedrick Cooper, Dominic Goodman, Nicholas Logan, Kieron Moore, Angus O’Brien, Rico Paris, Max Parker, Vera Farmiga, Brandon Tyer Moore, and Mattie Liptak.

In a recent interview with Variety, Miles Heizer expressed his enthusiasm for exploring more queer narratives within the military setting. He shared his hopes for the show to continue for many more seasons, citing the vast array of stories that could be told, from different Marine experiences to the impact of policies like Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and its eventual repeal.

Jennifer Cecil served as the showrunner and executive producer of “Boots,” with series creator Andy Parker as co-showrunner and executive producer. The show also had a team of executive producers including Rachel Davidson, Peter Hoar, Scott Hornbacher, and Brent Miller, with Todd Lewis and Cyndi Brenner handling production duties.

While the cancellation of “Boots” may come as a disappointment to fans, the legacy of the show and the important stories it told about LGBTQ individuals in the military will surely leave a lasting impact. Despite its short run, “Boots” will be remembered for its representation and exploration of queer identities in a challenging and historically significant setting.
