Braves’ Spencer Schwellenbach land on 60-day IL
The Atlanta Braves suffered a major setback on Tuesday as their starting rotation took a hit with the news that right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has been placed on the 60-day injured list due to inflammation in his throwing elbow. This injury comes as a blow to the 25-year-old, who missed the final three months of the 2025 season after fracturing the same elbow in late June.
New Braves manager Walt Weiss expressed sympathy for Schwellenbach, acknowledging the talented pitcher’s potential and bright future despite the setback. While the injury is not as severe as a UCL tear, Schwellenbach is still expected to be sidelined for a significant amount of time.
Schwellenbach had emerged as a key figure in the Braves’ starting rotation last season, showcasing his talent with a 3.09 ERA in 17 starts. In his rookie season in 2024, he also impressed with a 3.35 ERA in 21 outings, establishing himself as a promising young arm for the team.
Unfortunately, Schwellenbach’s injury adds to the challenges the Braves have faced with their pitching staff in recent times. With players like Spencer Strider, Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, Grant Holmes, and AJ Smith-Shawver also dealing with injuries in 2025, the team has been tested in terms of pitching depth.
Weiss remains optimistic despite the setbacks, highlighting the opportunity for other capable pitchers to step up and fill the void left by Schwellenbach’s absence. The Braves will need to rely on their depth and resilience as they aim to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 season and contend in a competitive NL East division alongside the Mets and Phillies.
With aspirations of returning to the playoffs and competing for a World Series title, the Braves will need to navigate through the challenges posed by injuries and setbacks to achieve their goals in the upcoming season.
