Brian Grazer Talks ‘Splash,’ ‘8 Mile’ and How He Uses AI

Brian Grazer, a young producer with a relentless determination, refused to give up on his mermaid movie idea despite facing numerous rejections. His perseverance paid off when the movie, “Splash,” became a hit in 1984 and kickstarted his successful career in the entertainment industry.

Even when faced with doubts about whether to pursue 2002’s “8 Mile” with Eminem, Grazer found confidence after a conversation with Tom Hanks over dinner. The film went on to win an Oscar for best song, proving Grazer’s instincts right.

In a recent conversation at the Paley Center for Media’s Paley Media Council series in Beverly Hills, Grazer shared insights from his early career and his thoughts on the future of film and television. He emphasized the importance of curiosity and a drive to constantly learn and explore new ideas, qualities that have been instrumental in his 40-year partnership with director Ron Howard at Imagine Entertainment.

Grazer described his approach to producing, highlighting the importance of a strong, compelling idea that can be easily summarized and has a character that audiences can root for. He pointed to films like “Backdraft” and “8 Mile” as examples of projects that embody these principles.

When discussing how he has adapted to new technologies and platforms, Grazer mentioned his experimentation with AI tools for brainstorming and pre-visualization. While he finds AI to be a valuable tool in the creative process, he emphasized the importance of human collaboration and creativity in storytelling.

Grazer and Mary Parent, chairman of worldwide production for Legendary Entertainment, also touched on the changing landscape of the film and TV industry, particularly in terms of how creative talent is compensated. Grazer expressed concerns about the shift towards flat salaries in streaming platforms, which he believes can be dis-incentivizing for artists who thrive on taking risks and betting on themselves.

Overall, Brian Grazer’s insights into the entertainment industry highlight the importance of creativity, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace new technologies while staying true to the core principles of storytelling and character-driven narratives. His success serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and a passion for creating compelling and meaningful content in a rapidly evolving industry.
