‘Broadway Dads’ influencer dies at 46 after rare cancer diagnosis
Broadway Husbands influencer and actor Bret Hanna-Shuford has tragically passed away at the age of 46 after battling a rare form of cancer. His husband, Stephen, took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that early this morning we said goodbye to the most amazing man, husband, and Papa in the universe. Our hearts are broken but we will continue to make him proud of us.”
The couple, who shared a three-year-old son named Maverick, had been documenting their family life on their popular “Broadway Husbands” Instagram page, which boasts over 255,000 followers. Hanna-Shuford, known for his role in “Wolf of Wall Street,” was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and T-Cell Lymphoma over the summer, rare disorders that affect the body’s immune system.
HLH is a condition where the immune system reacts excessively to a virus, leading to the production of too many cells that end up attacking the body. T-Cell Lymphoma, on the other hand, is a rare and aggressive cancer that originates in the body’s white blood cells responsible for supporting the immune system.
Despite his health struggles, Hanna-Shuford continued to pursue his acting career, appearing in productions such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Ragtime, Wicked, and the Little Mermaid. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to support the Broadway star, with contributions from fellow Broadway actors John Tartaglia and Douglas Sills.
Throughout his battle with cancer, Hanna-Shuford remained transparent about his journey on social media, sharing updates with his followers. In a touching message from his hospital bed on Christmas, he expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support he had received.
The Broadway community mourns the loss of Bret Hanna-Shuford, a talented actor, loving husband, and devoted father. His legacy will live on through his work and the memories he created with his family.
