‘Buffy’ Reboot Star Thanks Fans After Hulu Axes Show

After months of anticipation, fans of the hit TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” were left disappointed when it was announced that Hulu would not be moving forward with the reboot starring Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The news came directly from original star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who shared the update on her Instagram account.

In a heartfelt video message, Armstrong expressed her gratitude to fans for their support and excitement leading up to the show’s premiere. Despite the cancellation, she emphasized the positive experience she had working on the project and thanked the original cast members, including Gellar, for their support.

The new “Buffy” series was initially ordered to pilot at Hulu in February 2025, with acclaimed filmmaker Chloé Zhao attached to direct and executive produce. Titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” the reboot was set to introduce a new generation of characters to the iconic world of the Slayer.

In addition to Armstrong, the pilot cast included talented actors such as Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott. Gellar was also set to reprise her role as Buffy in a recurring capacity, adding a nostalgic touch for longtime fans of the series.

Gellar’s announcement on Instagram came as a blow to fans who were eagerly awaiting the new chapter in the “Buffy” saga. Despite the setback, she expressed her gratitude to Zhao for the opportunity to revisit the beloved character of Buffy Summers. Gellar reassured fans that the legacy of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” would endure, even if this particular project did not come to fruition.

As fans process the news of the cancellation, they can take solace in the fact that the spirit of “Buffy” lives on through the original series and its dedicated fan base. While the future of the franchise remains uncertain, the impact of Buffy Summers and her supernatural adventures will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.
