Bundesliga game between St. Pauli and Leipzig called off due to heavy snow

The match between Leipzig and St. Pauli in the German Bundesliga scheduled for Saturday has been canceled due to heavy snowfall. St. Pauli, based in Hamburg, northern Germany, made every effort to ensure the game could proceed safely, but the challenges of clearing the snow from the stadium roof proved too difficult.

Despite ongoing efforts to clear the snow over several days, it was ultimately decided that calling off the game would help ease the strain on emergency services, the transport system, and the healthcare system. The heavy snowfall in northern and eastern Germany also led to disruptions in long-distance rail travel and road journeys.

It is currently uncertain when the rescheduled match will take place. Leipzig is currently in fourth place in the Bundesliga, while St. Pauli sits in 16th place in the league standings.

Other Bundesliga games scheduled for Saturday in areas affected by heavy snow include Werder Bremen vs. Hoffenheim and Union Berlin vs. Mainz. Bremen has advised fans to arrive early and consider alternative modes of transportation, while Union Berlin fans have volunteered to assist in clearing snow and ice around the stadium.

This round of games marks the return of Bundesliga action following the winter break, while the women’s Bundesliga will resume on January 23.

In the Netherlands, a top-division men’s match between NEC Nijmegen and Utrecht was called off on Friday due to weather forecasts. However, other top-tier Dutch games are set to go ahead as planned, though second-division matches have been postponed.
