Bye Bye, Alexa? Google Home Speaker Might Make Me Switch
Google has been a significant part of my digital life for as long as I can remember. From using Chrome for web browsing to relying on Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, and Google Keep for various tasks, I have immersed myself in the Google ecosystem. Even my TV runs on a Chromecast with Google TV, and I have been a loyal user of Pixel phones.
The only exception to my Google-dominated world has been my smart speaker, which has always been an Amazon Echo. Despite briefly trying out a Google Nest Mini in 2022, I was left disappointed by its buggy performance and lack of responsiveness. The Alexa speaker, on the other hand, has been a reliable companion for tasks like checking the weather, setting timers, and playing music.
However, as Amazon introduces Alexa+, an upgraded version of its digital assistant, I feel it might be time for a change. The recent announcement of Google’s new smart speaker, the Google Home Speaker, has caught my attention. Set to be released in Spring 2026, this device will feature Gemini, Google’s advanced AI assistant, known for its ability to provide detailed answers to complex questions.
One of the main reasons I am excited about the Google Home Speaker is its sound quality. With a speaker that wraps around the device for 360-degree audio, I expect a significant improvement over my previous Nest Mini. While the audio may not rival that of a high-end Bluetooth speaker, I value good sound combined with a smart virtual assistant.
Unlike my current Echo Dot with Clock, the Google Home Speaker does not have a display or camera, which is a plus for me as I prefer a minimalist design. The only potential downside I see is the need to switch from Amazon Music to Spotify or YouTube Music for music streaming, but this could also be an opportunity to declutter my music library.
Priced at £99/$99, the Google Home Speaker is affordable enough for me to consider making the switch. If it lives up to its promises, Google could have a winner on their hands, and my long-standing relationship with Alexa may finally come to an end.
