Los Angeles-based Doan’s Bakery has issued a recall for two of its cakes, including the White Chocolate Coconut cake that gained popularity after the actor began gifting it to friends during the holidays. The recall was initiated due to a labeling error, according to the FDA.
The White Chocolate Coconut and Carrot Bundt cakes from Doan’s may contain undeclared wheat and milk, as stated by the FDA in an announcement on October 1. The bakery decided to voluntarily recall the cakes to address the presence of these allergens, which could pose a serious risk to individuals with allergies to wheat or milk, potentially leading to severe or life-threatening reactions upon consumption.
These cakes were sold by Doan’s and distributed nationwide through Goldbelly.com from June 1, 2025, to September 24, 2025. The bakery has since updated its labeling to reflect the correct ingredients and has confirmed that no allergic reactions or illnesses have been reported in connection with the issue. The problem was discovered during a routine facility inspection conducted last month.
On Goldbelly.com, the White Chocolate Coconut cake is priced at $110, while the Carrot cake is listed at $106. The cakes are described as coveted gifts among Hollywood’s A-list celebrities, with the coconut cake being singled out as a personal favorite of a famous actor, without explicitly naming Cruise.
Notable recipients of the cake, as listed on the site, include Barbara Walters, Jimmy Fallon, Kirsten Dunst, Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and others. A segment by Spectrum News in 2021 identified Cruise as a customer of Doan’s Bakery, with the family-owned shop expressing gratitude for his patronage. In 2022, Rosie O’Donnell shared a photo on social media of the cake accompanied by a holiday card from Cruise.
Karen Doan, the owner and creator of the cakes, mentioned in an interview that the popularity of the coconut cake among celebrities like Jimmy Fallon has been overwhelming. The bakery continues to enjoy the support of high-profile customers like Cruise and appreciates the recognition received for its delicious creations.
