Cal Ritchie’s Islanders injury will keep him out through Olympic break
The New York Islanders will be without Cal Ritchie for an extended period due to a lower-body injury, coach Patrick Roy announced. The injury will keep Ritchie out through the Olympic break, with just four games left before the three-week hiatus. Ritchie attempted to skate on his own but experienced setbacks, leading to a decision to keep him off the ice for now.
It remains unclear when Ritchie sustained the injury, as he last played in a game against the Sabres. The injury has allowed the Islanders to delay a challenging lineup decision regarding Ritchie’s return. With the addition of Ondrej Palat and Bo Horvat’s return from injury, finding a spot for Ritchie in the lineup has become a complex task.
Max Shabanov, who had been a regular in the lineup, has seen reduced playing time since the acquisition of Palat. Ritchie, who typically centers the second or third line, may need to shift to the wing or require other lineup adjustments to accommodate his return.
The Islanders face a dilemma in deciding which winger to bench, especially with the fourth line performing well. Despite Jonathan Drouin’s scoring drought, his overall game contributions have kept him in the lineup. When Ritchie is ready to return, the Islanders may consider sending him back to AHL Bridgeport to ensure he receives ample playing time.
In other news, Casey Cizikas returned to the lineup after missing a game due to illness, while Shabanov was a healthy scratch. Since the acquisition of Carson Soucy, he has taken on the majority of Matthew Schaefer’s penalty kill minutes. Despite Schaefer’s heavy workload, Roy acknowledged the importance of managing his ice time to prevent fatigue and maximize his performance on the ice.
