California chef Valentino Luchin arrested for robbing three San Francisco banks in one day

Valentino Luchin, a well-known California chef, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. The 62-year-old former executive chef at Rose Pistola in San Francisco was arrested for allegedly committing three bank robberies in one day in the city. The San Francisco Police Department reported that Luchin targeted three different banks in the area on September 10, passing handwritten notes to the tellers demanding money.

The first robbery took place at a bank near Grant Avenue in Chinatown around noon. The teller informed police that Luchin handed her a note demanding cash, and she complied out of concern for her safety. After receiving a bag of cash, Luchin fled the scene. The exact amount stolen was not disclosed by officials.

Following the first robbery, an investigation by the city’s Robbery Unit identified Luchin as the suspect. The police connected him to two more bank heists in the Central District that same day, noting similarities in the suspect’s description and robbery style. Community tips and the SFPD’s “ambassadors” program also played a role in identifying Luchin as the alleged bank robber.

Luchin was apprehended later that day without incident and booked into the San Francisco County Jail. He faces charges of two counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery. This is not the first time Luchin has been accused of robbing a bank. In 2018, he was arrested for allegedly robbing a Citibank in Orinda, where $18,000 was stolen.

In a jailhouse interview following his previous arrest, Luchin claimed he resorted to bank robbery out of desperation after the closure of Ottavio in Walnut Creek, a restaurant he once owned. He emphasized that he never intended to harm anyone and used a fake gun during the robberies. Luchin stated that his life took a downward spiral after the closure of Ottavio, leading to financial struggles and desperation.

Born in Italy’s Veneto region, Luchin immigrated to the US in 1993 and gained recognition in the culinary world. However, financial troubles and the closure of his restaurant pushed him to desperate measures. Bankruptcy records from 2015 showed Luchin and his wife falling behind on their Chapter 13 plan, with significant debt and few assets.

The tale of Valentino Luchin serves as a cautionary reminder of how quickly one’s life can unravel in the face of financial hardship. Desperation can drive individuals to make choices they never thought possible, leading to dire consequences.
