California professor Jonathan Anthony Caravello arrested for allegedly tossing tear gas canister at ICE agents during raid on marijuana farm
A professor from California has been arrested for allegedly throwing a tear gas canister at ICE agents during a raid on a marijuana farm in Ventura County. Jonathan Anthony Caravello, a math and philosophy professor at California State University Channel Islands, was apprehended by federal agents during the raid at Glass House Farms. The arrest was made under the charge of violating federal law, specifically 18 USC 111, which pertains to assaulting, resisting, or impeding law enforcement officers.
Contrary to claims made by the California Faculty Association that Caravello was “kidnapped” by federal agents, a criminal complaint obtained by the Ojai Valley News revealed that the professor was involved in obstructing the execution of a search warrant near Glass House Farms. The affidavit stated that Caravello was seen using a megaphone and playing a siren sound towards agents, leading to a clash between protesters and law enforcement officers. The escalation resulted in protesters throwing rocks at government vehicles, causing damage.
During the chaos, Caravello was allegedly caught on camera attempting to kick a tear gas canister thrown by agents, but ultimately throwing it back at law enforcement. After evading the scene initially, Caravello returned wearing different clothes and was identified as the individual responsible for throwing the canister. He resisted arrest by kicking and refusing to comply with the agents’ commands, leading to his apprehension.
Following his arrest, Caravello was released on bail of $15,000, with an arraignment scheduled for August 1. California State University Channel Islands issued a statement supporting Caravello’s right to peaceful protest as protected by the First Amendment. The university emphasized its commitment to free expression, academic freedom, and due process.
The raid on Glass House Farms was conducted due to allegations of hiring and harboring undocumented workers, resulting in the arrest of over 350 individuals. The Department of Homeland Security reported the rescue of migrant children from potential exploitation, forced labor, and human trafficking during the operation. Glass House Farms is now facing allegations of child labor law violations, although the company maintains that they have always complied with hiring practices and never employed minors.
In conclusion, the incident involving the arrest of Professor Caravello highlights the complexities and tensions surrounding immigration enforcement operations and protests. The case underscores the importance of upholding the rights of individuals to protest peacefully while also ensuring compliance with the law and protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation.
