California storm latest: Man killed after water pushes vehicle off bridge

Heavy rain has been wreaking havoc in Southern California this weekend, leading to tragic consequences. Officials have confirmed that at least one person has lost their life due to the storm.

Evacuation warnings and orders in Los Angeles County were finally lifted on Saturday night, as the worst of the storms passed through the region. Despite the rain still impacting the area, residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the immediate danger seems to have subsided.

The torrential downpour affected at least 22 million people, causing floods and strong winds throughout the region. The first wave of heavy rain hit early Saturday morning, followed by a second round between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time.

Reports of damage and flooding have been pouring in from various parts of the state. One heartbreaking incident occurred in Sutter County, where a 71-year-old man lost his life after his Mazda CX-5 was swept off the Pleasant Grove Creek Bridge by the rushing waters. The bridge had been inundated with two to three feet of water following the intense rainfall.

The threat of flash flooding, mudslides, and debris flows looms large over areas scarred by recent wildfires. Wildfire burn scar regions are particularly vulnerable to these natural disasters, but the risk extends beyond these areas to the entirety of Southern California.

The mountainous regions of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties are expected to bear the brunt of the storm, with rainfall totals predicted to reach 4 to 6 inches. To put this into perspective, Los Angeles typically receives only 0.8 inches of rain for the entire month of November.

While the heavy rain is expected to taper off by Saturday night, an unsettled weather pattern will persist into early next week, bringing more wet weather. The looming threat of flash flooding, debris flows, mudslides, and landslides will continue to pose a significant risk as the rain falls on already saturated grounds and vulnerable areas.

As the communities in Southern California brace themselves for the aftermath of this destructive storm, it is crucial to remain vigilant and prepared for any further challenges that may arise in the coming days.
