Cam Thomas, Michael Porter Jr. combine for 64 points in bounce-back effort
The Brooklyn Nets had a tough start to their season opener, with Cam Thomas and Michael Porter Jr. struggling to find their rhythm on offense. However, they bounced back in the Nets’ home opener against the Cavaliers, despite ultimately losing 131-124.
Thomas exploded for 33 points and nine assists, just shy of his career high, while Porter added 31 points on 5-of-10 shooting along with eight rebounds. It was a much-needed performance from the duo after their lackluster showing in the season opener.
After a slow start in the first quarter, Thomas heeded his teammates’ advice to be more aggressive on the offensive end. The result was an impressive scoring outburst in the final three periods, accompanied by seven assists.
Speaking after the game, Thomas credited his teammates for encouraging him to be aggressive and find a balance between scoring and playmaking. He emphasized the importance of playing the right way while staying true to his aggressive scoring mentality.
The game marked the first time the Nets had two 30-point scorers since November 2023, showcasing the offensive firepower of Thomas and Porter. Additionally, rookie Egor Dëmin impressed off the bench, knocking down three 3-pointers in 25 minutes of play.
Dëmin’s shooting performance in the past two games has been historic, tying him for the third most 3-pointers by a rookie in their first two career games in league history. The rookie’s sharpshooting has been a pleasant surprise for the Nets early in the season.
Ziaire Williams also had a standout game, matching his career high with nine field goals and six 3-pointers en route to 25 points. Coach Jordi Fernández praised Williams’ activity and shooting prowess, highlighting his impact on the game.
Despite the strong individual performances, the Nets faced a disruptive moment when a fan ran onto the court with 5:02 left in the game, prompting a swift response from security.
Looking ahead, the Nets will be without Drake Powell, Danny Wolf, and Haywood Highsmith due to injuries. Fernández provided updates on Powell and Wolf, stating that both rookies are day-to-day as the team prepares for a Texas back-to-back against the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets.
In light of the recent illegal gambling arrests that shook the league, Fernández expressed his support for the NBA’s efforts to educate players on the rules and regulations surrounding gambling. He emphasized the importance of following the proper steps to ensure the well-being of the young players in the league.
Overall, the Nets showcased their offensive firepower in the home opener, with Thomas, Porter, and the rest of the team stepping up despite the loss to the Cavaliers. As they navigate through early-season challenges, the Nets will look to build on their positive performances and continue to improve as a cohesive unit.
