Camp Mystic counselor who died in Texas flooding remembered as ‘loyal and beloved’

Chloe Childress, a beloved counselor at Camp Mystic, tragically lost her life during the devastating flooding in Hunt, Texas, over the holiday weekend. The news of her passing was confirmed by a representative from her alma mater, The Kinkaid School.

Having graduated from The Kinkaid School just earlier this year, Chloe was preparing to embark on a new chapter at the University of Texas at Austin in the upcoming fall semester. Jonathan Eades, the head of The Kinkaid School, fondly remembered Chloe as someone who had a unique ability to make everyone around her feel truly seen and valued. He praised her for her unwavering compassion and the calming presence she brought to any room she entered.

During her time in high school, Chloe was actively involved in various activities. She served as the co-president of the school’s honor council, excelled in varsity cross country, and even founded a club dedicated to assisting senior citizens. Her commitment to serving others and her selfless nature left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.

Tragically, Chloe met her untimely demise while upholding her values of compassion and dedication to others. Eades emphasized that Chloe’s legacy of empathy, honesty, resilience, and joy will continue to inspire those who knew her.

The devastating flooding that struck Texas over the Fourth of July weekend resulted in at least 78 confirmed fatalities, with many individuals still reported missing. Kerr County bore the brunt of the casualties, with 68 individuals, including 28 children, believed to have lost their lives.

Camp Mystic, situated along the banks of the Guadalupe River, was one of the hardest-hit areas, with 11 young female campers and counselors, including Chloe, tragically losing their lives in the floodwaters. The Guadalupe River experienced a rapid and unprecedented rise of 26 feet in just 45 minutes, surpassing previous flood records set in 1987, as reported by the National Weather Service.
