Campbell Soup executive called its products food for “poor people,” lawsuit claims
A recent lawsuit filed in Michigan has brought to light some disturbing allegations against a Campbell Soup Company executive. The suit, filed by Robert Garza, a cybersecurity analyst hired by Campbell’s in September 2024, claims that executive Martin Bally made offensive comments during a meeting in November of the same year. According to the lawsuit, Bally made derogatory remarks about Indian workers and stated that Campbell’s products were meant for “poor people.”
Garza alleges that he reported these offensive comments to his manager, J.D. Aupperle, on January 10, but claims that Aupperle did not encourage him to escalate the issue to human resources. Shockingly, Garza was later terminated from his position at Campbell’s just weeks after the incident.
The conversation between Garza and Bally was reportedly recorded and aired on Detroit television station WDIV. Campbell’s spokesperson, James Regan, stated that the company was not aware of the recording before it aired and is uncertain of its legitimacy. Bally, who holds the title of vice president and chief information security officer at Campbell’s, is currently on temporary leave pending an investigation by the company.
Campbell’s has vehemently denied the allegations made against Bally, stating that the comments on the recording are not only inaccurate but also absurd. The company emphasized that the individual in question works in IT and has no involvement in the production of their food products.
In response to the controversy, Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, announced on social media that the state’s Consumer Protection division is investigating the quality of Campbell’s products. Garza, represented by the Runyan Law Group, is seeking compensation for emotional, reputational, and economic harm, as well as attorneys’ fees.
Overall, this lawsuit has sparked a significant amount of attention and scrutiny towards Campbell’s and its executive team. The company’s reputation and the quality of its products are now under intense scrutiny, and the outcome of the investigation will likely have far-reaching implications. It remains to be seen how Campbell’s will address these allegations and restore trust among its employees and consumers.
