‘Cancer on our society right now’
Utah Governor Urges Public to Avoid Social Media Following Charlie Kirk Assassination
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has issued a strong warning to the public, urging them to stay away from social media platforms in the aftermath of the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Cox referred to popular apps like X, Facebook, and TikTok as a “cancer on our society” and emphasized the psychological damage that graphic images of violent events can cause.
Cox, who is currently serving his second term as governor, expressed concern over the circulation of disturbing images of Kirk’s shooting death, stating that humans are not biologically equipped to process such violent content. He also cited the viral spread of footage depicting the fatal stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska as further evidence of the harmful effects of social media.
The governor urged people to disconnect from their devices, go outside, spend time with loved ones, and engage in positive activities within their communities. He emphasized the importance of avoiding the consumption of violent content, describing social media as a negative influence on society.
During a press conference, Cox shared quotes from Kirk, including a message advising people to stay grounded and prioritize real-life interactions over online discourse. He emphasized the need for individuals to take a break from the internet, focus on personal well-being, and remember that online outrage does not reflect reality.
In light of Kirk’s assassination, allegedly carried out by 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, Cox described the event as a pivotal moment in American history. He called on Americans to choose a path towards unity and peace, rather than further division and conflict.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of Kirk’s tragic death, Cox urged individuals to consider the impact of their actions online and strive to create a more compassionate and understanding society. He emphasized the importance of choosing a path of de-escalation and unity, rather than allowing violence and hatred to prevail.
