Casa Bonita to host Halloween-themed pop-up in October
Exciting news for fall! Casa Bonita will transform into a seasonal pop-up called Casa BOOnita to celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos starting Sept. 30. Co-owner Matt Stone shared with JS that the iconic Lakewood restaurant will be adorned with festive decor and surprises until Nov. 2. Guests can enjoy the spooky atmosphere at no extra cost beyond their meal.
While most changes are decor-related, some roaming performers will be temporarily removed from the floor during the pop-up, leading to a disagreement with the restaurant’s union. Stone and Trey Parker, creators of “South Park,” purchased Casa Bonita in 2021 with plans to continuously refresh the guest experience. The pop-up serves as a test for future holiday activations, aiming to prevent Casa Bonita from becoming stagnant.
Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters when visiting Casa BOOnita. The absence of traditional entertainers like Black Bart and the Sheriff during the pop-up is part of the evolving performance canvas concept that Stone envisions for the restaurant.
Future special activations for holidays like the Fourth of July or Christmas are also on the horizon. However, changes to the cast have sparked a dispute with the Actors’ Equity Association, who filed an unfair labor practice charge due to concerns about reduced work hours for performers.
Despite the controversy, Stone reassured that Casa Bonita will continue to evolve with changing performers and seasonal themes. Reservations for October are now open on casabonitadenver.com.
