Casey O’Brien had homecoming dream fulfilled as Sirens’ draft pick
After experiencing a mix of shock and excitement, Casey O’Brien was thrilled to learn that she had been selected by the New York Sirens in the PWHL Draft. Sitting with her family in Ottawa, Ontario, she had been contemplating her potential landing spots when the Sirens made a trade to secure the third overall pick, which turned out to be O’Brien.
Growing up in SoHo and learning to play hockey at the Chelsea Piers sports complex, O’Brien felt a deep connection to New York. She fondly recalled how she would tag along with her older brothers to the rink, eventually falling in love with the game. This made being drafted by the Sirens a dream come true for her.
After honing her skills at Minnesota prep powerhouse Shattuck St. Mary’s, where she posted impressive stats over a three-season stretch, O’Brien went on to play collegiately at Wisconsin. Her success on the ice culminated in winning three national titles and the prestigious Patty Kazmaier Award as the best collegiate player.
Now, O’Brien is ready to bring her winning mentality to the Sirens and help build a culture of success for the team. Despite the team’s struggles in the past, O’Brien is focused on the future and is excited to start fresh with her new teammates. She is particularly looking forward to playing alongside familiar faces like Sarah Fillier, Anne Cherkowski, and Makenna Webster, whom she considers her best friend.
With a roster filled with players she has shared the ice with before, O’Brien is confident that the team will have instant chemistry and be able to hit the ground running. As they embark on a new season, O’Brien and her teammates are determined to leave the past behind and work together to achieve success on the ice.
