Chaos hits NYC morning rush hour as PATH lines suspended over fire investigation
A fire broke out under a PATH train at the Newport PATH station in Jersey City early Monday morning, causing chaos for commuters as multiple lines were suspended. The incident occurred around 6:15 a.m. when an eastbound train filled with smoke, prompting the evacuation of passengers. Dramatic video footage captured passengers urgently calling for the doors to be opened as the train car became engulfed in smoke, with one person shouting, “Move, move, move!”
Fire trucks and emergency vehicles quickly responded to the scene at the Newport PATH station, where flames could be seen belching out of the end of the train. Several passengers were treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the incident. The disruption led to the suspension of trains from Journal Square and Hoboken to 33rd Street, as well as trains from Hoboken to the World Trade Center.
This latest incident added to the recent string of transportation issues affecting commuters traveling between New Jersey and New York City. In recent weeks, there have been multiple bus crashes involving New Jersey buses, as well as a car catching fire in the Lincoln Tunnel. The ongoing challenges faced by commuters highlight the importance of maintaining infrastructure and ensuring the safety of public transportation systems.
