Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith bicker over NBA gambling scandal on-air

The recent gambling scandal that rocked the NBA has caused quite a stir among basketball fans and analysts alike. Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley, two former NBA players turned analysts, had differing opinions on the matter during a segment on “Inside the NBA” before Thursday night’s games.

Smith emphasized the addictive nature of gambling and how it can lead individuals to make illogical decisions, risking millions of dollars for significantly less on a bet. He pointed out that regardless of background or financial status, gambling addiction can cloud judgment. On the other hand, Barkley attributed the scandal to sheer stupidity, dismissing the notion of addiction playing a role.

The scandal involved the arrest of Heat guard Terry Rozier, Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA player Damon Jones in a federal probe into illegal gambling and rigged poker games. Rozier allegedly facilitated bets on his own stat lines, knowingly pulling himself from games early to benefit bettors.

Barkley argued that the players involved were making millions in the NBA and risking it all for minimal gains through gambling was foolish. He firmly stated that fixing basketball games is impossible and that the actions of the accused were purely driven by stupidity rather than addiction.

Smith and Barkley continued to debate their viewpoints, with Smith reiterating the illogical nature of risking millions for small rewards in gambling. Shaquille O’Neal also chimed in, expressing disappointment in the accused individuals for putting the NBA and their families in a negative light.

The FBI’s investigation uncovered a rigged poker game ring allegedly backed by New York City organized crime families, resulting in the arrest of 31 individuals. Billups was implicated as the face of the scheme, defrauding victims of $7 million through rigged poker games.

Rozier was accused of providing insider information to bettors, allowing them to profit from his actions during games. His arrest, along with Billups and Jones, was part of separate FBI probes into illegal gambling operations known as Operation Royal Flush and Operation Nothing But Bet.

The NBA gambling scandal has sent shockwaves through the basketball community, highlighting the dangers of addiction and the consequences of engaging in illegal activities. As the investigation unfolds, the league and its players are under scrutiny, with the hope of maintaining the integrity of the game.
