‘Chasing Time’ to Launch ‘POV Shorts’ Season 8 Lineup
POV Shorts is gearing up for its eighth season, set to launch on Nov. 18 with the premiere of Jeff Orlowski-Yang and Sarah Keo’s “Chasing Time.” This season, the series will feature seven acquisition titles that delve into a range of themes such as intergenerational care, mentorship, local culture, chosen family, memory, identity, and the power of history.
Since its inception in 2018, POV Shorts has provided a platform for filmmakers to showcase stories that tackle contemporary issues and cultural narratives. Opal H. Bennett, POV senior producer and POV Shorts executive producer, expressed pride in the upcoming collection of films, noting the creative boundaries pushed by the filmmakers and the inspiring individuals featured in the series.
“Chasing Time” reunites the team behind the acclaimed documentary “Chasing Ice” to present visual evidence of climate change and urge viewers to take action for a sustainable future. The short doc premiered at the 2024 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.
Joining “Chasing Time” on Nov. 18 are Imani Dennison’s “The People Could Fly,” Twiggy Pucci Garçon’s “Mn,” and Marshall Granger’s “Your Opinion, Please.” “The People Could Fly” uncovers the history of Black gathering spaces and roller-skating culture in Louisville, Kentucky, while “Mn” follows emerging drag ballroom divas Mermaid and Milan. “Your Opinion, Please” presents unedited live call-in comments from Yellowstone Public Radio juxtaposed with present-day Montana.
On Nov. 25, the remaining three short docs from season eight – “In Songs of Black Folk,” “La Orquesta,” and “Classroom 4” – will be released. “In Songs of Black Folk” captures top Black musical talent on a Pacific Northwest stage, “La Orquesta” follows a teacher-activist and her youth orchestra in Atlanta, and “Classroom 4” delves into a prison classroom studying the history of crime and punishment.
Several films from the season, including “Songs of Black Folk,” “Chasing Time,” “The People Could Fly,” and “Classroom 4,” have been qualified for Oscar consideration. Additionally, “The New Indigo Wave” is part of the eighth season and currently streaming.
All seven short docs will be available for streaming on POV.org and the PBS App, providing viewers with thought-provoking and impactful stories that spark conversation and make a difference.
