ChatGPT Ads Being Tested for Some Tiers
OpenAI has recently announced that it is introducing advertisements to its ChatGPT AI chatbot. This move will see ads being displayed to users on the Free and Go subscription tiers in the US, while users on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will remain ad-free.
The purpose of these ads, according to OpenAI, is to support broader access to more powerful ChatGPT features. The company emphasizes that these ads will not influence the responses provided by ChatGPT, and user conversations will not be shared with advertisers.
For users who prefer to avoid ads, there are options available. They can choose to upgrade to the Plus or Pro tiers, or they can opt out of ads in the Free tier, although this may result in fewer daily free messages.
OpenAI has outlined strict guidelines for the placement and content of ads within ChatGPT. Ads will be clearly labeled as sponsored content and visually distinct from the chatbot’s responses. The content of the ads will be based on topics previously discussed by the user or ads they have interacted with, rather than through advertiser insights.
Furthermore, ads will only be shown to adults aged 18 and above, and will not appear near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, or politics. OpenAI gives the example of showing meal kit or grocery delivery ads to users who have previously researched recipes.
Overall, OpenAI’s introduction of ads in ChatGPT aims to enhance the user experience and support the development of new features. By following strict guidelines and ensuring user privacy, OpenAI is working to strike a balance between monetization and user satisfaction.
