ChatGPT introduces new parental controls amid concerns over teen safety

The company now requires users between the ages of 13 and 18 to obtain parental consent before using ChatGPT.

The newly implemented parental controls allow parents to link their own ChatGPT accounts to those of their teenagers and customize settings to ensure a safe and age-appropriate experience. Certain types of content, such as graphic material, viral challenges, and sensitive themes like sexual or violent role-play, are automatically restricted on linked teenage accounts.

In addition to content moderation, parents can opt to receive notifications from OpenAI if their child displays signs of potential self-harm while using ChatGPT. A team of trained individuals will review such situations, and if acute distress is detected, parents will be contacted through email, text message, and push alerts on their phones.

OpenAI is also working on establishing protocols for reaching out to law enforcement or emergency services in cases where a teenager is at imminent risk and parental contact is not possible. The company acknowledges that some teens may turn to ChatGPT during difficult moments, and the new notification system is designed to alert parents to potential issues.

Furthermore, OpenAI has implemented age-appropriate content rules for users under 18, directing them to a version of ChatGPT with tailored responses.
