Cherki pulls out Haaland celebrations after wonder goal in Man City’s win in the English League Cup
Rayan Cherki emulated his teammate Erling Haaland’s iconic goal celebrations after scoring a stunning goal in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Brentford in the quarterfinals of the English League Cup. The French playmaker showcased his talents by curling a magnificent shot into the top corner, prompting him to perform robot moves and a yoga pose in celebration.
Cherki, who recently joined City from Lyon, has quickly become a fan favorite with his impressive skills and technique. In a previous match against Sunderland, he caught the attention of manager Pep Guardiola with a remarkable “rabona” cross that led to a goal by Phil Foden. Despite his flair on the pitch, Guardiola has encouraged Cherki to simplify his game, drawing comparisons to Lionel Messi.
The goal Cherki scored against Brentford was a thing of beauty, reminiscent of something Messi would produce. After receiving a headed clearance at the edge of the box, Cherki skillfully deceived a defender before unleashing a powerful shot that found the top corner of the net.
City extended their lead in the 67th minute when Savinho’s shot took a massive deflection, leaving Brentford goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson helpless. Although Haaland was named as a substitute for the match and didn’t feature, he was seen congratulating Cherki as he was substituted in the second half.
With the win, City advanced to the semifinals of the League Cup, joining Chelsea who secured their spot with a victory over Cardiff City. The quarterfinal matchups will conclude next week as Arsenal takes on Crystal Palace.
In other League Cup action, defending champions Newcastle were set to face Fulham in a later kickoff on Wednesday. For more soccer news, follow AP Soccer at https://apnews.com/hub/soccer.
