Chicago braces for expanded ICE enforcement over the weekend

The Chicago area is preparing for increased immigration enforcement, set to begin as early as Friday, as announced by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. At a recent press conference, Pritzker disclosed that U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations would intensify in Chicago over the upcoming weekend, potentially involving up to 300 ICE agents, as per local officials.

In response to the impending ICE enforcement, city officials from neighboring communities are bracing for the impact of the additional agents. Gregory Jackson, Chief of Staff in North Chicago, Illinois, stated that agents and officials are expected to be based out of the Great Lakes Naval Station for approximately 30 days.

Fencing has been observed being erected around the federal courthouse in Chicago, in anticipation of the enforcement actions. Furthermore, El Grito Chicago, the city’s festival commemorating Mexican Independence Day, has decided to postpone the event scheduled for the following weekend due to the ICE activity.

Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago has voiced opposition to the expanded ICE presence, emphasizing that the city does not welcome militarized immigration enforcement within its borders.

The escalated enforcement measures coincide with President Donald Trump’s intentions to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago in response to the city’s crime rates. President Trump has repeatedly targeted Chicago for potential National Guard deployment, following similar actions in Washington.

Governor Pritzker has firmly rejected the Trump administration’s involvement in Chicago, stating that he will not request troops from the President. Instead, Pritzker has emphasized the importance of local governance in addressing law enforcement issues within the city.

A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security has clarified that the enforcement efforts are primarily focused on apprehending serious criminal offenders. The spokesperson underscored the administration’s commitment to apprehending and deporting criminal illegal aliens, regardless of their location, including sanctuary cities like Chicago.

The enforcement actions are part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and uphold immigration laws, according to the DHS spokesperson. The administration’s stance is clear: individuals who enter the country illegally and engage in criminal activities will be pursued, arrested, and deported, without exception.
