China says it’s willing to work with U.S. on TikTok
Beijing and Washington have agreed to collaborate in resolving the issues surrounding the divestiture of TikTok’s U.S. operations, as stated by China’s Commerce Ministry in a recent announcement. The details of the agreement were not disclosed, but the ministry emphasized the importance of working together to find a solution.
The discussions between the two countries come after a crucial meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking their first in-person interaction since Trump assumed office. While Trump did not address the TikTok situation directly during the meeting, he did mention plans to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods in exchange for Beijing postponing its rare earths restrictions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that progress has been made in finalizing the TikTok agreement during trade talks in Malaysia. He expressed optimism that the deal would receive Chinese approval in the coming weeks, bringing the long-standing issue closer to a resolution.
Despite the positive developments, uncertainties remain regarding the specifics of the agreement. Louise Loo, head of Asia economics at Oxford Economics, highlighted the potential risks of policy miscalculation due to the lack of clarity surrounding the deal. It is essential for both parties to align their interests to ensure a successful outcome for TikTok’s U.S. operations.
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has yet to comment on the latest developments. Under U.S. national security law, ByteDance is required to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations to avoid potential bans in the country. However, the final approval from China is still pending for the proposed joint-venture company that would oversee TikTok’s operations in the U.S.
As the negotiations continue between Beijing and Washington, the resolution of the TikTok issue remains a top priority for both parties. The collaboration between the two countries signals a willingness to address the challenges and find a mutually beneficial solution for all stakeholders involved.
