China set to attend India’s upcoming AI summit signaling improving relations with New Delhi

China and India are set to strengthen their ties as China plans to send a delegation to India’s upcoming AI summit. The delegation will be led by a vice minister from China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, showcasing the improving relationship between the two neighboring countries.

The news of China’s participation in the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, scheduled for February 16 to 20, was confirmed by George Chen, partner and co-chair of digital practice at consultancy The Asia Group. The Indian embassy in Beijing has facilitated the arrangement of visas for the Chinese delegation, marking a significant step towards collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence.

This move comes at a time when China and India have been working to mend their relationship following a border skirmish in 2020. In response to the incident, India had banned several Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, citing security concerns. However, bilateral tensions have eased in recent months, with the resumption of direct flights and tourist visas between the two countries.

The positive momentum in China-India relations was further highlighted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin in August. A widely-shared video of Modi, Xi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin laughing together on the sidelines of the summit symbolized the thaw in relations between the countries.

China’s participation in the AI summit in India underscores the growing importance of technology and innovation in international relations. Several prominent U.S. business leaders, including Bill Gates and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, are also expected to attend the summit, showcasing the global significance of the event.

As China and India come together to explore opportunities in AI development, the stage is set for closer collaboration and mutual benefit in the realm of technology. The upcoming summit in India coincides with China’s Lunar New Year festival, adding a cultural element to the gathering of minds and ideas in the field of artificial intelligence.
